This Scandal star is about to make history.

SO I haven’t talked about this because it’s not strictly Disney related but it’s a huge win in terms of diversity and representation. As some of you more theatre-savvy people might know, Norm Lewis is about to become the very first Black Phantom on Broadway in the show’s 25+ years run. Keep in mind he’s not the first black actor to play the Phantom, however this is still historic for many reasons.

Not only is Norm is paving the way for people of color on Broadway, he’s aware of it! Norm has talked numerous times about racial diversity and expressed his “impossible” dream of being the Phantom back in 2008. Well the Disney expression is applicable here for dreams DO come true! Norm is donning the iconic mask starting May 12 on the Broadway stage.

Norm also has a vision for Broadway and diversity:

He hopes, then, that casting directors will be more open to seeing black actors for period productions in the future. “If they have the talent, let them come in and audition,” said Lewis. “Maybe you might see something that you didn’t see before.” (x)

Here is Norm Lewis singing the last lines of ‘Music of The Night’.
